Is a Canadian college diploma still worth it?

For most people, no — not as the default it was in 2023. The route still works for a specific person: one who picks an eligible field, can fund it without borrowing at high interest, and treats the work permit as a job search rather than a formality. As a general plan it no longer survives its own arithmetic.

  • Pulled DailyStudy permits issued to Indian nationals fell from 283,665 in 2023 to 98,995 in 2025 — -65.1%.
  • Computed HereThe first 7 months of 2026 annualise to about 67,586, which would be lower again.
  • Computed HereOn our default assumptions an eight-month diploma leaves you −CAD 7,012 after a full year on the work permit — after tax and after rent.
  • Verified By HandA college credential only leads to a work permit if its field is on IRCC's eligible list. A college diploma in business does not currently meet the PGWP field-of-study requirement. A bachelor's or master's degree in business does, because degrees are exempt from the field test.
  • Verified By HandYou must show CAD 23,448 in living costs on top of first-year tuition and travel.

Where this could be wrong: The cost model assumes CAD 16 an hour. In a market this much tighter than 2023 that is optimistic rather than central, so treat the figure as the better end of the range rather than the expected one.

GermanyCanada

Germany or Canada for a master's?

On money, Germany wins and it is not close. The question is whether you will learn German — without it you are competing for a narrow slice of English-speaking employers, and the route's main advantage disappears.

  • Verified By HandGermany charges no tuition at public universities — a semester contribution of €150–350 replaces it. First year all in: $12k–20k against $24k–38k for Canada.
  • Verified By HandThe EU Blue Card floor for a recent German graduate is €45,934 — a legal minimum, roughly double what our Canadian model assumes for a post-study year.
  • Verified By HandAt the minimum wage that rose to €13.90 in January, 20 hours a week earns €14,456 a year against a €13,092 funds requirement.
  • Verified By HandA Blue Card reaches a settlement permit in 21 months with B1 German, or 33 without. That one year is the whole argument for the language.
  • Pulled DailyIndian enrolment in Germany reached 69,816 in winter 2025/26, now the largest international group in the country.
  • Our EstimateOur residence estimates: Germany 4–6 years, Canada 3–5 years.

Where this could be wrong: Canada keeps one real advantage: you can compute your own eligibility from a published grid and get the same answer the government does. Germany's outcome depends on landing a Blue Card job, which no points table will tell you in advance.

Where are Indian students actually going now?

Away from the big four and toward Germany and Ireland. The total number leaving India has fallen by roughly a third, but the more useful fact is that the flow did not just shrink — it moved, and it moved toward the destinations where the arithmetic still works.

  • Verified By HandDepartures for study fell from 9.08 lakh in 2023 to 6.26 lakh in 2025 — -31.1%.
  • Verified By HandGaining: Germany +68%, Ireland +49%.
  • Verified By HandLosing: Canada -41%, United Kingdom -27%. The US and Australia declined in double digits without a published figure.
  • Pulled DailyGermany's Indian enrolment hit 69,816, up 17.5% in a year, while the market it draws from shrank by a third.

Where this could be wrong: Following the flow is not automatically right. Germany and Ireland are getting harder to get into precisely because everyone is rerouting there, and arriving late to a crowded route is exactly how the Canadian diploma boom went wrong.

Ireland

Is Ireland a real alternative or just the new bandwagon?

Real, with one large caveat. An English-speaking EU member with a permit that reaches long-term status in two years is a genuinely strong position. Dublin housing is the binding constraint and it is not improving.

  • Verified By HandThe Critical Skills Employment Permit reaches Stamp 4 after two years, and five years of reckonable residence opens citizenship.
  • Verified By HandMinimum salary rose to €40,904 with a relevant degree from 1 March 2026, on a published upward path — check the threshold in force on the day the permit is filed, not today.
  • Verified By HandIndian departures to Ireland rose 49% between 2023 and 2025 — the second-fastest gain after Germany.
  • Verified By HandGraduate permission is 12 months at level 8 and up to 24 months at level 9 and above.
  • Our EstimateFirst year all in $30k–45k, and our residence estimate is 6–8 years.

Where this could be wrong: Settle accommodation before the visa rather than after. And check your course is on the Interim List of Eligible Programmes — one that is not does not carry the graduate permission, whatever the institution says about its reputation.

Money

CanadaGermanyUKAustraliaIrelandNew Zealand

How much money do I actually need to show?

More than the number you were quoted, because the funds requirement sits on top of tuition and travel rather than including them. And the money has to look like savings, not like a loan that landed last week.

  • Verified By HandCanada: CAD 23,448 in living costs for a single applicant, on top of first-year tuition and return travel, for applications from 1 September 2026.
  • Verified By HandGermany: about €13,092 for the year, in a blocked account.
  • Verified By HandAustralia: AUD 29,710 in living costs, plus tuition and travel, with a AUD 2,500 visa fee on top.
  • Verified By HandIreland: €10,000 available for each year of study.
  • Verified By HandNew Zealand: NZD 5,000 for the post-study work visa.
  • Verified By HandUK: tuition plus living costs held for 28 consecutive days ending no more than 14 days before applying.

Where this could be wrong: Refusals cluster on funds that arrived too recently to read as savings. Six to twelve months of statements showing settled money, with a clear source, matters more than the balance on the day.

What CRS score do I actually need?

There is no single number, and the number everyone quotes is the wrong one. The general round is the hardest door in the building; several category rounds invite far below it, and which categories you qualify for matters more than your score does.

  • Pulled DailyCanadian Experience Class has invited between 507 and 523 this year across 17 rounds.
  • Pulled DailyThe lowest comparable cut-off this year was 169 — Physicians with Canadian Work Experience.
  • Pulled Daily8 categories have invited candidates this year: Physicians with Canadian Work Experience 169–223; Skilled Military Recruits 368–368; French-Language proficiency 382–420; Senior managers with Canadian Work Experience 389–429; Healthcare and Social Services Occupations 467–475; Transport Occupations 470–470; Trades Occupations 476–477; Canadian Experience Class 507–523.
  • Verified By HandArranged employment has been worth zero points since 25 March 2025. Anyone quoting you 50 or 200 points for a job offer is working from a stale playbook.

Where this could be wrong: Clearing a category's band is necessary, not sufficient — you also have to qualify for the category itself, and occupation boundaries matter more than job titles. Provincial nominee rounds are excluded here because those scores include the 600-point nomination.

Will a business diploma get me a work permit in Canada?

No — not as a college credential. This is the single most expensive misunderstanding in this market, and it is still being sold. A bachelor's or master's in business is fine, because degrees are exempt from the field test entirely.

  • Verified By HandA college diploma in business does not currently meet the PGWP field-of-study requirement. A bachelor's or master's degree in business does, because degrees are exempt from the field test.
  • Verified By HandEligible fields for college credentials: Healthcare & Social Services, Skilled Trades, Science, Technology & Engineering, Agriculture & Agri-Food, Transport, Education.
  • Verified By HandNot eligible as a college credential: Business & Administration, Hospitality & Culinary.
  • Verified By HandBachelor's, master's and doctoral graduates are exempt from the field-of-study test entirely. College certificates and diplomas must map to an eligible CIP code on IRCC's published list. IRCC confirmed on 15 January 2026 that the list is frozen for the rest of the year — nothing added, nothing removed. Check your programme's CIP code against the list before paying a deposit.
  • Verified By HandThe programme must also be at least 8 months, full-time and in person.

Where this could be wrong: Check your specific programme's CIP code against IRCC's published list before paying a deposit. A college's own marketing is not a determination, and the check is free.

UK

Is the UK still worth it now the Graduate Route is 18 months?

It depends entirely on your intake date, which is unusual and worth acting on. Apply by 31 December 2026 and you keep two years. From 1 January 2027 it is 18 months, and the same degree is worth six months less.

  • Verified By HandApplications submitted by 31 December 2026 receive two years. From 1 January 2027, non-PhD graduates receive 18 months. PhD graduates keep three years.
  • Computed HereA one-year master's starting September 2026 finishes around September 2027 — after the deadline. The same course started in January 2026 finishes in time.
  • Computed HereThat is a 25% cut in the window you have to convert into sponsored work, with nothing else on the application changing.
  • Verified By HandFunds must be held for 28 consecutive days ending no more than 14 days before you apply — the holding window was shortened.
  • Verified By HandIndian departures to the UK fell 27% between 2023 and 2025 on Bureau of Immigration data.

Where this could be wrong: The Graduate Route does not itself lead to settlement — it is a window to convert into Skilled Worker sponsorship. Most small UK employers hold no sponsor licence, so filter your job search by the published register before applying anywhere.

Can I pay for my studies by working part-time?

Nowhere will part-time work cover tuition. In Germany it will roughly cover living costs; in Canada it will not close the gap on our own model. Anyone telling you the job pays for the degree is selling you something.

  • Computed HereGermany: 20 hours a week at €13.90 is €14,456 gross a year, against a €13,092 funds requirement — the only destination here where the allowance is calibrated to the cost of living.
  • Computed HereCanada: 24 hours a week at CAD 16 leaves you −CAD 19,679 at the end of an eight-month diploma, after tuition, fees, airfare and rent.
  • Verified By HandCanada's off-campus limit is 24 hours a week, raised from 20 in November 2024.
  • Computed HereTotal upfront before you land, on our defaults: CAD 20,585. No part-time wage retires that during the course.

Where this could be wrong: These are gross of nothing but tax. Rent in Munich, Toronto, Sydney or Dublin will outrun the averages used here, and term-time hour limits are enforced.

Staying

USA

Is the US worth it with the green card backlog?

Judge the degree and the career on their own merits, because they are genuinely the best available. Do not judge it on permanent residence — for an Indian national on the ordinary employment route that queue is measured in decades, not years.

  • Our EstimateOur estimate for the ordinary employment route: 12–25 years. It is the longest on this site by a wide margin.
  • Verified By HandEB-2 and EB-3 priority dates for India run more than a decade behind, and the per-country cap means the queue does not clear.
  • Verified By HandEB-1A and EB-2 National Interest Waiver bypass it and typically complete in three to six years, but require a genuinely exceptional record rather than a good one.
  • Verified By HandOPT gives 12 months, extendable by 24 for eligible STEM degrees. Unemployment days are capped at 90 on OPT and 150 across a STEM extension.
  • Verified By HandFirst year all in: $45k–85k — the most expensive here, though assistantships move this more than in any other destination.

Where this could be wrong: A funded master's or PhD changes this calculation completely, in both directions: it removes most of the cost and it makes EB-1A or NIW substantially more reachable. If you have any case for those categories, get it assessed early rather than late.

Germany

Do I need German if my course is taught in English?

Not to study, and yes to everything after. Treating German as optional is the most common and most expensive mistake on this route — the language is what converts a degree into a job and a job into settlement.

  • Verified By HandSettlement at 21 months with B1 German, or 33 months without. A twelve-month difference.
  • Computed HereB1 from zero is commonly quoted at 350–600 hours. About 500 hours across a two-year degree is roughly five hours a week.
  • Computed HereFive hours a week for two years buys twelve months of earlier permanent settlement — the best exchange rate on this site.
  • Verified By HandThe job market outside a handful of international employers runs in German, so the effect on employability arrives long before the settlement clock does.

Where this could be wrong: The decision has to be made at enrolment, not after graduation. By the time the 18-month job-seeking permit starts, the clock has already begun and there is no time left to reach B1 from nothing.

How long until I actually get permanent residence?

Three to five years at the fast end, more than a decade at the slow end, and one destination where the answer is never. These are our estimates and nobody publishes an official one, so treat the ranking as more reliable than the individual numbers.

  • Our EstimateCanada: 3–5 years. Two years of study, one to two years of skilled work on the permit to reach the Canadian Experience Class or a provincial stream, then processing.
  • Our EstimateAustralia: 4–7 years. Two years of study, two to three on the graduate visa, then a points-tested or state-nominated route.
  • Our EstimateGermany: 4–6 years. Two years of study, then a job-seeking permit, then an EU Blue Card.
  • Our EstimateNew Zealand: 4–6 years. Study, then a post-study work visa, then the Skilled Migrant Category, which runs on a six-point system tied to qualifications, income and occupational registration.
  • Our EstimateUnited Kingdom: 6–10 years. A one-year master's, then the Graduate Route, then a Skilled Worker sponsorship, then qualifying residence toward settlement.
  • Our EstimateIreland: 6–8 years. A one-year master's, a graduate permission, then a Critical Skills Employment Permit — which reaches Stamp 4 after two years, and five years of reckonable residence opens citizenship.
  • Our EstimateUnited States: 12–25 years. This is the honest number for an Indian national on the ordinary employment route and it is the most important fact on this page.
  • Verified By HandUAE: there is no permanent residence to estimate. The Golden Visa is renewable residency, not settlement, and there is no route to citizenship.

Where this could be wrong: These measure residence, not citizenship, and the two are not the same wait. They also assume the route runs to plan — no refusal, no gap in status, no policy change. Every one of those has happened to somebody this year.
